Rockets! October 28, 2010

Here is an extract of Danielle’s newsletter: “This term we are beginning with a look into rockets and making them remain in the air for lengths of time. We have had Simon from Wastebusters come and visit today. He talked us through the physics behind the rocket we will create, considering how forces and momentum act to create something that can shoot high into the air at great speed. His university physics degree came in very handy while answering the myriad of questions regarding forces and momentum. He was fantastic at relating it all to the children’s world and connecting what they are learning to what they know, although a couple did say they thought their brains might explode and one wished he’d had a spare brain in his bag to use when this one got so sore and full! It all finished with the most memorable part—the firing of the rocket and testing of angles and water amounts. This will in turn lead onto discussions regarding energy use and methods for producing items of use from items of waste. He took some great photos (below).”

As part of their research for creating our own parachuted rockets, children visited Skydive Lake Wanaka to see a real parachute, how it is packed and created to ensure safety.

They are now busy creating their own rockets…

Presentation by Danielle.

Thursday 17 June, 7pm in Wanaka Primary School Rm 12A. Thanks Danielle for taking time to do the talk and Kharis for arranging the drinks (tea, coffee etc on the night. If any of you think that someone might be interested, give them a ring / reminder and encourage them to come.

Radio Talk

Callum and Danielle will do a radio interview on Tuesday at 10.10 a.m on Radion Wanaka. Tune in and better still, record a copy for those that might miss it.

Hopefully an article in the Wanaka Sun by Hamish, and Kathi from REAP is organizing something News on behalf of all REAP STARS.

Enrich @ILT

Lastly, I would like to share an article in the South Times June 12th issue. It was a 2 full page spread entitles ‘A haven for gifted kids’. There is a learning facility in Invercargill – Enrich @ILT for gifted kids. It was the brainchild of Salford School Principal Marlene Campbell and funding of more than $1 million in the past 2 years from Invercargill Licensing Trust and ILT foundation. 90 kids in the programme age 8 – 11 (not too sure). 3 teachers and they work out of an old Invercargill nightclub, ‘The Sugar Shack’ now revamped into a high tech facility. The principal is Pania MccVeay-Stewart. The colour photos show laptos, robotic lego and the good old chess game! We might have to make contact and go and check out the premises and have a ‘Meeting of Minds’ there. Might be a good excuse for a camp in Invercargill!

I think I have more or less covered all that we have planned for the week and term. Thank you all again for all your efforts and it’s rather mind boggling that such a small group has been able to organize so much.

Cheers Mei Lian

Thoughts on feelings… May 17, 2010

Anger

SHAPES: I used fire because sometimes when you get really angry you feel like going on fire. I used a cross bone because pirates have them on their flags and pirates are usually angry. I put smoke on my picture because fire makes smoke when it is hot.
COLOURS: I used orange because that is the colour of fire. I made my smoke grey because normally that is the colour of smoke. I used white for the bones because that is the colour of bones.

Fear

I used a square because, squares are a simple and you can turn them into anything you want to, like I did I turned it into a scary shape.
I used black and grey because they make you feel bad and when you are scared you feel bad they are also dark colours, I used white because it shows that there is a way out and there is a little light.

InvasiON

Shapes. I choose the eye because it makes you feel like someone is watching you. Sometimes you also feel scared or invaded.
Colours. I choose to make the eye blue because it looks nice and helps it give you the feeling of being invaded. I used the colours of a real eye to make it more realistic.

Wine Tasting event May 14, 2010

Why is it that many of the world’s critics view Riesling as the greatest white wine grape? Indeed, some will just say it is the greatest wine grape of any colour.

The chameleon character of Riesling is not easy to understand, many of its most famous wines have names so indecipherable that even the brave will run in fear from pronunciation.

But it is the greatest food wine on earth.

And without doubt it is the most versatile grape there is.

In a global journey comparing some of the foremost Rieslings in the world with New Zealand’s finest, we will hope to convert you to the cause. The tasting will be hosted by Nigel Greening, owner of Felton Road wines.

Some rare and valuable bottles will be opened, matched to four delicious courses of food from “Panini Noir”: Felton Road’s exclusive kitchen.

Friday 21st MAY 2010, at The Venue, Orchard Road Wanaka. 6.30pm – 8.30pm

Tickets $100. Proceeds go to the Star programme at Wanaka Primary School.

There is a strict limit of 32 guests. Only 7 tickets left ; From Wanaka Fine Wines

Our fundrasing activities are up and running for the year. You’ll reap the rewards of this when you receive the next invoice. Yeah!

This term we’ll be busy with another great Wine Tasting event and the Best of the Best waitressing. Visit the Administration Page on the blog regularly to keep up-to-date.

Check out the Parents Contacts list and ensure we have your details and they are correct. Thank you.

Welcome in 2010 February 23, 2010

A great turn out at our first meeting. Welcome everyone!

Firstly a huge thank you to Nigel and Kharis for the amazing effort they put in for our Winetasting evening. It was a fabulous success and thoroughly enjoyable.

Thank you to the parents who offered help for the Cavalcade parking, our first fundraiser this year.

Other fundraisers we discussed for the year were the opportunity to man a stall at the A&P Show in March (we are looking for parent help for this), have a stall at the WarBirds Over Wanaka, waitressing the Best of the Best show, manning the bar at the Firemen’s ball. We would also love to run another Winetasting evening given the success of the last one.

A couple of our children will talk to the local Rotary club about what the programme means to them, and about being gifted.

We encourage you to visit the Administration Page to keep updated and leave comments. We are working on getting a Google calendar up on the blog!
